35 years for racist couple who screamed N-word and pointed shotgun at kids party

A couple was charged with hate crimes because they drove through a child's birthday party yelling racist slurs and threatening to kill them with guns.

26-year-old Jose Ismael Torres received a 20 year sentence with 13 behind bars. His partner in crime, 25-year-old Kayla Rae Norton, received a 15 year sentence with six in the clink. That totals 35 years of sentencing for displaying confederate flags, pointing a shotgun, and calling people n*gger.

They are the last of a group of 15 who terrorized a young child's birthday party with threats of violence and racially charged words.

If you do hate crimes, then you get hate crime sentences. The worst part about his is that the couple have three kids together. Now those kids will be away from their parents, but maybe that's a good thing. This couple terrorized other kids at a birthday party, so I question their ability to be parents. Even if you don't like someone for their color, how can you even consider doing something to scare children? That's not acceptable.

The pair antagonised a family celebrating their son’s eighth birthday party by driving with a caravan of trucks waving confederate flags in Douglasville, Georgia, in 2015.

The couple, who were members of a group called “Respect the Flag”, shouted at adults and children at the party that they would “kill y’all n*****s” while brandishing the flags.

After interrupting the party, they went on to terrorise a nearby Wal-Mart and off licence.

Upon their release from jail, the pair have been barred from Douglas County.

One of the partygoers, who is also a mother, was there in court and said she forgives them for their hate crime, but she dreads the day she has to explain a certain word to her child.

Some people are outraged over the length of the sentencing. A hate crime is a hate crime and the judge did the right thing, even if it's extremely controversial. The judge has to put his foot down so these acts can one day stop happening.

That doesn't mean I agree with the length of the sentencing for each person. I think whomever brandished the gun should receive two or three years. The person who did not brandish a weapon could receive one year.

You have to consider the fact that no one was actually hurt and there's been plenty of worse things done that received a lesser sentence. Brock Turner, who was about to rape a girl behind a dumpster, is a prime example of that.

This sentencing by the judge should eliminate any further sense of white privilege, because if that was real, then the couple who committed a hate crime must have ran out.

The judge stated that even people who support the confederate flag would see this as an outrageous act that warrants an arrest.

What's your opinion?
Was it a fair judgement?
