If you're interested in attending the Afrofuture Fest in Detroit on August 3rd, then your tickets are free or half price if you're a person of color. If you're white, then you're not getting free tickets and you're going to pay twice the price if you really must be there that bad. In other words, white people are not welcome and if they show up, they're paying double for the tickets.
This is not the most productive way to mend whatever is left of the racial tensions from 150 years ago and it certainly smells a bit like racism to me.
In fact, the situation is so bad that one of the musical performers has already pulled out of it.
Metro Times reported that "Jillian Graham, aka Detroit-based rapper Tiny Jag, pulled out of a local music festival this week because she disagreed with its pay model, in which people of color would pay less for tickets than white festivalgoers.
Graham said she only found out about AfroFuture Fest's pay model when a white friend reached out to her and sent her a screenshot via Instagram that outlined the pay difference. The early bird POC ("people of color") ticket was $10 while the early bird "non-POC" ticket cost $20.
"I was immediately enraged just because I am biracial," Graham tells Metro Times. "I have family members that would have, under those circumstances, been subjected to something that I would not ever want them to be in ... especially not because of anything that I have going on."
Graham also stated that she would like to see equity put into the black community, but this was not the proper way to do it. Well yeah, because it's racist. If this was any other way around, it would be all over the news and have protests.
