Former ICE Director slams AOC with facts about children separated from families
When you're the rookie and you go up against the veteran and get slapped silly - that's what happened here when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was questioning Tom Homan, former ICE Director, about the situation at the bordered and separating children from their families. Homan nailed her on some key points and it seems like AOC simply ran out of questions for him and abruptly moved to the next. This all went down during the Congressional hearings related to the border situation.
The video is rather hilarious because Homan says things in a way that it seems like he's said these a million times. He rattles off short and precise answers, mentions real laws and scenarios, and AOC seems to be dumbfounded like she's hitting a wall with a rubber hammer and not making any progress knocking it down.
AOC mentioned the "family separation policy" memo and suggested that Homan wrote it. He stated that he did not write it, but made suggestions to Homeland Security about a "zero tolerance" policy directed at people who cross the border illegally. I guess if you're the director of ICE and you want to protect the border, then that's one way to do it. Too bad some people don't follow laws.
As the exchange went on, Ocasio-Cortez stated that it included family separation. Here's where it gets funny - not in what he says, but HOW Homan delivers the message in his "OMG I am so tired of saying this all the time" voice.
After a brief pause, a seemingly rattled Ocasio-Cortez said, “Zero tolerance was interpreted as the policy that separated the children from their parents.”
“If I get arrested for DUI and I have a young child in the car I’m gonna be separated,” Homan said. “When I was a police officer in New York and I arrested a father for domestic violence, I separated that father from his family.”
“Mr. Homan, with all due respect, legal asylees are not charged with any crime,” said the congresswoman.
But Homan was ready, with a specific U.S. code no less: “When you’re in this country illegally, it’s violation 8, United States Code 1325.”
“Seeking asylum is legal,” she insisted.
“If you want to seek asylum, you go through a port of entry,” he responded. “Do it the legal way. The Attorney General of the United States has made that clear.”
“Okay,” said Ocasio-Cortez."
When Homan says “they can come in a port of entry,” what he doesn’t say is that the admin has practically closed ports to asylees.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) July 12, 2019
Out of desperation, families do what Óscar & Valeria(the father & daughter who drowned) did: face dangerous terrain.
These are policies of cruelty. https://t.co/ifQOxe1t5Z
It didn't really work, but it was a nice try pandering with emotion instead of logic.
How about this? If all the people flooding America because they hate their homeland so much turn around and work TOGETHER to make their own country great again, then we won't have such a big problem, will we?
Obama deported 2.5 million over eight years. What if even HALF of those folks went home and helped make their own community worth living in?
Those folks need to stop putting their children in danger by sending them ALONE to the border. They could get scooped up by Jeffrey Epstein for all we know! It's NOT safe and the kids deserve better.
And yes, please go to the port of entry like Homan said. That's the way to do it and the parents can go WITH their children instead of risking them being part of an Epstein and R.Kelly plot.
Meanwhile, they could also stay home and Make Mexico Great Again!
