Welcome to 2017 where everything is racist. If it's not racist now, then it will be soon. The latest lashing comes from a professor, Kyna Hamill at Boston University, who claims that "Jingle Bells" is racist. The professor, a theater historian, argues that the song was initially used to make fun of black people.
James Pierpont wrote the song in 1850. It's over 100 years old and one of the most popular songs beyond the planet. Since the song is so old and was around throughout a time when racism was somewhat high and slavery existed, then it is entirely possible that the song may have been used in a racially charged way. However, the song "Jingle Bells" has not had an ounce of racism in it since I've ever known it. In fact, if the song were meant to be racist, then we would have learned about it a long time ago.
The fact is this - the song may have been used the wrong way back in the day, but the song itself is not racist. The claims that it could be racist are ridiculous and just another way to destroy Christmas. People love to attack the most wonderful time of the year.
The professor claims that 'Jingle Bells' is rooted in racism because people used blackface back in the day.
So what? Who the hell cares?
People used blackface to perform lots of songs, but that doesn't make every song racist just because someone played it with, or while someone was wearing, a black face costume.
The claim seems to be based on something that is from 1857. EIGHTEEN FREAKING FIFTY-SEVEN!!!
What year is it? Oh yeah, that's right. 2017. We are 160 years beyond the time where someone used a black face when none of us were even a thought.
"As I mentioned in my article, the first documented performance of the song is in a blackface minstrel hall in Boston in 1857, the same year it was copyrighted,” Hamill told Fox News. “Much research has been done on the problematic history of this nineteenth-century entertainment.”
It sounds like it was a terrible article. To suggest that a song might be considered racist because of something that happened in 1857 is just absolutely the most far liberal reach you can ever imagine.
Hamill went full liberal, and it's deplorable. Oh wait, that's our word! The liberal reach on calling a Christmas carol racist is unimaginable.
When you're a professor at a well known university and find yourself in the media, then you should hope that it's not for something as stupid as this.
Jingle Bells is not racist.
Jingle Bells is racist, White Christmas is racist, Baby it’s Cold Outside is sexist. What the hell happend to the America I grew up in where people didn’t wake up every day trying to find something to be offended by? pic.twitter.com/eEbkzT5NCH— Richard C Hendry (@richc580) December 14, 2017
