Reporter Sarah Jaffe responded to a Miami Police Department tweet of a bunch of African American looters in a local jail cell by telling the Twitterverse that arresting looters is inseparable from white supremacy. The reporter's tweet has received over 2,000 likes and 1,000 retweets when we last checked. That's a lot more than I get on a normal day, but I don't usually post something as stupid. I don't generally suggest that police are potentially linked to white supremacy simply because they did their job and arrested people stealing non-survival items during a major natural disaster such as Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Harvey. Stealing televisions because it's raining out is a crime. Stealing food and baby supplies because your house was knocked over and flooded is survival. There's a difference and neither of the two involve any form of racism.
Jaffe has written for numerous high profile media outlets like The Washington Post, Salon, and The Atlantic. She is also part of a liberal group that promotes free press and has even written a book called "Necessary Trouble: Americans in Revolt."
Many Twitter users were quick with their backlash to her statement noting that she had no idea what she was talking about and if she was trying to polarize the disproportionate number of blacks in jail then she should just come right out and say it, not insinuate it.
She was quick to retort by calling her detractors facilitators of white supremacy and even Nazis too.
No one likes white supremacists or Nazis, both of which seem like they are basically liberals with bad tattoos and on the other side of the political field. In all honesty, there's not much difference from the extreme far left or far right - they're both nuttier than a squirrel turd. The moderates and sensible people are all good.
Back to looting...
Looting has been documented in South Florida with social media users posting pictures and videos of people looting shoe stores and other retail stores, walking out with nothing that even resembles a necessity for survival. Law enforcement has taken a hard stance on this and been quick to locate and arrest as many looters as they can. Ft. Lauderdale authorities have already arrested 19 people on looting related charges. I guess all the arresting officers are Nazis? What if they're black? Still a Nazi?
What this journalist is implying is that police are acting in a Nazi fashion by arresting poor, hungry looters from getting the things they need for them and their families to survive. I'm not sure what Air Jordans and flat screen TV's are doing that is required for survival. Perhaps so they can run away from other looters, or get to new stores faster and watch the news on a large TV so they know which businesses are unattended? Or maybe they rescued the items from potential damages? Thank goodness someone saved all those LED televisions!
Ms Jaffe seems to be shamelessly riding the coattails of a popular uproar against the rise in looting that is happening in the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Exploiting looting is a trend that some really dense and sad people are exploiting to gain attention, no matter how misguided or absolutely ridiculous it may be. It's not like someone can eat a television or float down a flooded street on it. This is straight up theft for no good reason other than being a lowlife.
Jaffe is part of a group that advocates the press's freedoms, but is it really helping anyone if she abuses these hard gained rights by shooting salad for the sake of self promotion?
What's your thoughts?
