Tuesday October 31,2017 terrorist Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, drove a Home Depot rental truck a reported 20 blocks along a bike path in New York City. the path went from W. Houston St to Chambers St. where it collided with a school bus and a police officer detained the suspect. According to reports six people were pronounced dead at the scene and two more died later at a local hospital. About 12 other people were injured. A total of 20 people, so far, were reported to be assaulted in this horrible terrorist attack in Manhattan
Police are reporting that they found a note in the truck that pledges allegiance to ISIS. The note translates to "ISIS Lives Forever" according to a senior official briefed on the investigation. At least one knife was found in the truck, the official said. He was heard calling out "Allahu Akbar," which is Arabic for "God is Great" just before a NYC Patrolman wounded and detained him. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital. Investigators said he was bragging about the attack.
NBC News reports that Senator Graham is asking that Sayfullo be declared an Enemy Combatant. He wants to invoke the Law of War due to these types of attacks. In Europe there have been similar attacks using cars and trucks to kill and maim people in this terrorist war. Mayor Bill de Blasio said. "This violence was an effort to make us blink and we won't blink." Colin Clarke of the RAND Institute said “It was really only a matter of time, I think, before these tactics migrated here,”; “In fact, I’m surprised it took so long for us to experience something like that. It was going to happen here."
New York City has many bike and walking trails that help with the street congestion. These are unfortunately prime targets for these types of terrorist attacks all over the world. There is no effective way to block all of the bike paths and open spaces in our cities. Our cities and small towns like those in Europe are open to these types of attacks.
There may never be an understandable reason as to why anyone would commit such a heinous act, other than to cause people to become too terrified to walk in the open, gather for celebrations, go to outdoor venues such as Central Park in NYC, or attend open air concerts in other cities. The annual Halloween parade was not canceled, although security and police presence was increased during the festivities.
President Trump tweeted "My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack. God and your country are with you!"
Trump said in a statement. "My Administration will provide its full support to the New York City Police Department, including through a joint investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We offer our thanks to the first responders who stopped the suspect and rendered immediate aid to the victims of this cowardly attack. "
