Rashida Tlaib calls for $18-$20 minimum wage
Rep. Rashida Tlaib called for the minimum wage to be increased to $18-$20, over the federal minimum wage of $15 that was recently passed by the House last week. Tlaib was speaking at an event in Detroit in support of the One Fair Wage organization that is lobbying to get restaurant workers on the same federal wage for nontipped workers.
Tlaib was criticizing the minimum wage of $2.13 that tipped employees receive. She criticized how some jobs allow people to live on their tips, despite how some people earn a very good living if they're working in good locations with high tipping customers.

Tlaib said, "Think about that for one minute. People cannot live on those kinds of wages. We can’t allow people to be living off of tips and relying on tipped wages." She also stated that the newly passed $15 federal minimum wage needs to be adjusted up to $18 to $20.
According to a report by The Hill, she also called out a group called America Rising. They're a political action committee who support Republicans, while Tlaib is a Democrat. America Rising shared the video of her calling for the minimum wage increase and it already has over 1 million views.
Tlaib said, "By the way, when we started it, it should have been $15. Now I think it should be $20. Make sure America Rising hears that. It should be $20 an hour — $18 to $20 an hour at this point.
Tlaib's basis for saying the newly raised $15 minimum wage should go up is the rising prices of consumer products.
“They say all of this is going to raise the costs, but I can tell you milk has gone up,” Tlaib said. “Eggs have gone up. Everything has gone up. The cost of food has gone up. The cost of a lot of things that we need has gone up already.”
Many people believe fast food workers should not receive $15 minimum wage.
Many people are already expressing their disinterest in the federal minimum wage hike and stating the potential negative effects of it. Some responded with jokes, and some even said why should we stop at $20? Why not make the minimum wage $100?!

Worker: "Yippee! More money for me! Why, in a 40 hour work week, I'll make...!"
Boss: "That's the next thing. I'm cutting your hours to 20 hours a week so I don't have to fire you."

I really want these people who are calling for a federally mandated $15/hr minimum wage explain why a federally mandated $100/hr minimum wage is infeasible.— Eddie (@eddiespencer1) July 22, 2019
