New Jersey has been placed on alert for the possibility of strong thunderstorms packing gusty winds and heavy downpours during the afternoon and evening on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of the Garden State, from Somerset and Middlesex counties down to Cape May County, effective from 1:15 p.m. until 7 p.m.

UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Cape May, Cumberland and southern Atlantic counties from 2:45 p.m. through 3:45 p.m. Radar has detected wind gusts as strong as 70 mph and penny-size hail in a storm cell heading into the South Jersey region, according to the weather service.

Strong storms that are moving in from the South and West could bring heavy rain, large hail, cloud-to-ground lightning and damaging winds as high as 60 mph or even stronger, the weather service's Mount Holly forecast office said in a storm briefing.

Although the biggest threats are expected to be gusty winds, frequent lightning and flooding in poor drainage areas, the weather service is not ruling out the possibility of isolated tornadoes.

It looks like a big storm is about to sweep the east coast in a gust of rain and wind.

Vote now to REMOVE Pelosi from GOVT!

The picture looks frightening!!

Hopefully the bite is smaller than the bark and there's no tornadoes.

Batten down the hatches and put your rain boots on. It's gonna be a wet afternoon!
