Singer of 'Nothing Compares 2 u' Sinead O'Connor has announced her conversion to Islam and the new name she plans to use.
Sinead O’Connor has converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada Davitt. The 51-year-old singer is best known for her hit song, 'Nothing Compares 2 U', made the recent announcement and also updated her social media account on Twitter to show herself wearing a hijab.
Her new name, Shuhada Davitt, is the Arabic word for 'martyr.'
She recorded herself singing an Islamic call to prayer and that video is below.
Sinead, who has struggled with mental health issues, told fans: “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim.
“This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey.
“All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant.
“I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada.”
O’Connor is a mother of four and was Catholic in the 1990's. This isn't the first time that she's changed her name. Page Six stated that "Sinead changed her name last year to Magda Davitt, saying in an interview that she wanted to be “free of parental curses."
