Christmas is a time for miracles, usually when least expected, but needed most, often just in the nick of time.

So it was when a Pizza Hut delivery driver in Lewisville, Texas – just north of Dallas near the Oklahoma border found himself at the center of a church community’s Christmas play that changed his life, quite possibly saving it.

Devin Cammack was called into work earlier than usual and sent on a delivery run to Victorious Life Church, where he assumed pizzas had been ordered for a holiday party, but as it turned out – he was to be the lead character in the church’s Christmas play.

Congregant David Hira, who was acting the part of a character who had ordered a pizza, called the stunned Cammack to the stage.

“He came down the aisle and I sat him down and said, ‘There’s something big going on in your life, you have a life-changing event coming up,’” Hira said later.

Cammack, completely taken aback, said he was only able to stammer, “Huh, what, how do you know this?”

Noel Pearce, Victorious Life’s worship leader, had written and directed the “play.”

The father of three was asked to share his story – the diagnosis of end-stage heart failure two years ago, that has been treated so far with an implanted heart pump that requires a battery pack to allow him to work when he is away from the at-home “plug-in” charging system.

Cammack – just 31-years-old – explained to the congregation, “I need this to live,” as he patted his chest, “and medication.”

And that was their cue.

“Everyone got up out of their seats and came up to us and dropped money in the hat – $1,456,” he said later.

“The world is good... it is full of goodness and kindness and people are just waiting to be able to express that in some way and be witness to that. It was phenomenal.”

The Christmas “miracle” wasn’t finished, as Devin was told by his cardiologist that the planned heart transplant would no longer be needed as the current treatment is bringing the condition under control.

The implant he has relied upon for two years will still be needed and he will require medication for the rest of his life, but his future looks far brighter than when he set out on the pizza delivery run to the church the day before.

Cammack calls it, “Amazing – one of the most humbling experiences in my life.”... read more
