Trump endorses candidate who voted for Hillary
Current U.S. President Donald Trump endorses a candidate who not only repeatedly encouraged him to drop out in the 2016 Presidential election and also openly supported and voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton.
The president fully endorses Carlos Gimenez, tweeting
He supported Carlos Gimenez in Florida's 26th Congressional District. He did not suport Irina Vilariño, a refugee from communist Cuba who is openly pro-Trump.
In an interview with WFOR CBS4 in 2016, Gimenez stated
I'm not going to endorse anybody, but between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, I'm not voting for Donald Trump. Obviously, I must be voting for Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump needs to step down. I don't think he is viable as a presidential candidate.
Back in 2014, Gimenez was pondering on whether or not he'd leave the Republican party. He stated that he holds a nonpartisan position, bothered by being labeled because of the party. He doubles down on it, saying he is an independent thinker and supports both the Democrats and GOP. While he is registered as a Republican, he take his position as a nonpartisan.
On the other hand, his counterpart Irina Vilariño is said to be a party loyalist. In an article by the Daily Wire, she is described as an interesting contrast with Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL). In her interview with Daily Wire, Vilariño voiced out the reason as to why she's running for office. She fears that the same policies that ruined her country were manifesting in the Democrat Party. She enumerated the three top issues that voters wanted to address; national debt, healthcare and the environment, stating
The most important, I feel, is the national debt because if we do not address that, there will not be enough financial resources in the world to deal with the other two issues. Strengthening the middle class is the priority. If Americans don't feel they can make ends meet, that allows socialists to tout their entitlement agenda. Once people get on that train, it will be too difficult for them to get off of it.
Vilariño is actually outspoken in her support of the president, even attending political events with him and defending him on the times she made appearances on CNN. This is why it is quite weird that the president supports Gimenez instead.
