President Trump just swung a heavy hammer at the head of Pakistan and cut off their foreign aid. This is BIG! Trump announced this via Twitter on New Year's Day. It seems like the reason is that President Trump is not happy with Islamabad's efforts to protect against terrorism. Trump didn't go into specifics about how much aid will be cut off, but it could be everything.
America sends $255 million to help with military assistance in Pakistan, but now it looks like Pakistan might be on its own to protect and fight against terrorism. The thought process of Trump is probably along the lines of this: what's the point in sending them $255 million if they're not doing anything useful with it?
Trump also went on record to accuse Pakistan of basically helping terrorists.
"In August, President Trump said the “next pillar” of his strategy for battling terrorism would involve a “change in our approach to Pakistan.”
Trump accused Pakistan of giving “safe haven to agents of chaos, violence, and terror.”
“We can no longer be silent about Pakistan’s safe havens for terrorist organizations, the Taliban and other groups that pose a threat to the region and beyond,” the president said. ”These killers need to know they have nowhere to hide – that no place is beyond the reach of American arms."
This isn't the first time Trump held money from Pakistan. Over the summer his administration refused to send $50 million to Pakistan because Islamabad wasn't bringing down the Taliban or Haqqani Network. Some reports suggested that Pakistan was helping them instead of hunting them. That irritated Trump as he's all about cutting down the terrorist networks as much as possible.
?"The Trump administration withheld $50 million in military aid to Pakistan over the summer because it felt Islamabad was not doing enough to bring down the Taliban and the Haqqani Network. There was some criticism at the time that despite his strong complaints about Pakistan refusing to help fight the Taliban or even actively colluding with it, Trump was dealing more harshly with Egypt over human rights violations by its government."
So now what? If this is a full elimination of all aid being sent to Pakistan, then they're going to face a deficit and will probably begin working with terror cells if they can't defeat them. According to Trump and sources, it seems like Pakistan wasn't doing a good enough job with the money they received from the United States, so Trump wants to drain the swamp and stop spending millions where he gets little to no return on his investment.
