Officer Smith survived a surprise shooting by suspect Malcom Orr. Smith responded to a call about someone stealing groceries from shoppers. He attempted to stop and talk to the suspect who ignored the officer's commands. Smith threatened to taser him, but he didn't stop. Then he turned around and shot the police officer with a 9mm. He hit the cop at least four times and ran away. Officer Smith went to his car for cover and call for help. He told the dispatcher to "tell my family I love them" because he thought he was going to take his last breath. Smith survived and Orr was caught and sentenced to 35 years in jail.
