Showtime is working on the "First Ladies" series. Michelle Obama will be played by Viola Davis.
"First Ladies" is a series that will show how influential the wives of the US presidents really can be. It will portray not only Michelle Obama but also Eleanor Roosevelt and Betty Ford. And this only in the first season that "has been put on fast-track development," like Deadline wrote.
Viola Davis will not only play Michelle Obama, but she will be also an executive producer of the project. Aaron Cooley, on the other hand, is responsible for a story on this one, with collaboration from Cathy Schulman, Jeff Gaspin and Brad Kaplan, just like from Davis and Julius Tennon.
But Showtime's "First Ladies" want to show not only the real power of the Presidents' Wives and their engagement in America's political and social life. Schulman's company, Welle Entertainment, likes to produce content dedicated mostly to females. And the First Ladies series should definitely catch that part of the American audience.
Michelle Obama met few times with the actress that is going to portray her, Viola Davis. The actress also particularly likes the former First Lady. In 2017, she posted a tribute to Michelle Obama and her husband, writing "May you continue to shine your light and impact future generations to come."
It is also said that Obamas themselves are engaged in producing movie content. In 2018 they signed a special contract with Netflix to produce various films and shows.
"Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect, and inspire us all,” said Barack Obama back then. Obama's production company, Higher Ground, acquired the documentary American Factory, which shows the differences between the Chinese and American mentality on an example of a Chinese-owned factory in Ohio. I actually watched this doc in the last week, and liked it. It was both humorous, scary and thought-provoking at the same time.
